FAQs

Why was a new league created?

The leadership of both Contra Costa Spring League (CCSL) and Bay Area Ladies League (BALL) recognized that the time had come to make changes to better meet the needs of the women we serve. Women’s lives have changed a great deal since CCSL and Ball were founded over thirty years ago! Women are much busier. The overlap of the two leagues has been increasingly difficult. At any given match, many women have no idea if they are playing a BALL or CCSL match. Captains reported great difficulty fielding lines. Defaults are on the rise. Tennis directors and captains have difficulty in securing court time for BALL, FALL, CCSL and USTA leagues. Players have expressed displeasure with split starts.

In short, it was time to re-think our business model. We can do better!

What are the goals of the league?

The primary goals of EBWT are to foster good sportsmanship and to create a league focused on camaraderie and a fun tennis experience.

If EBWT is a non-profit are my fees and dues tax deductible?

No.  EBWT is a 501(c)7 social and recreational entity. Membership fees and/or donations are not tax deductible.

How does EBWT differ from USTA?

USTA is a competitive league organized to allow participants to play tennis against a variety of players within their USTA rating. Generally, EBWT does not focus on USTA rankings. The idea is to bring together groups of women who enjoy playing together and to provide an opportunity for women of differing skill levels to play with one another.  The lines in each division help distribute levels of skill.  Captains are expected to play their line straight up with stronger players play on lines 1 and 2  and less skilled players on lines 3 and 4.  Together, the team moves up or down in their division based upon their collective performance.

When does EBWT look at USTA rankings?

USTA rankings are used for the Singles Division and for 4.0 players.  4.0 players may only play on an A team. See league rules for detailed information regarding the singles division and 4.0 players.

Does EBWT affect my USTA rating?

No.
