The East Bay Women's Tennis League Story

EBWT is a 501(c)7 non-profit organization governed by a 100% volunteer staff consisting of four executive officers and an advisory board.

The primary function of EBWT is to coordinate team/player registration and match schedules. The 2022-2023 season has 12 doubles divisions (regular & seniors) and one singles division, with a total of 105 teams competing. The season runs from September until May, capped by a celebratory luncheon and awards ceremony.

Participating teams pay a $125 fee to join EBTW. These funds are used to pay for administrative, legal, and insurance fees, and help supplement the cost of the annual luncheon. Currently, the average price per player (per team) is about $6.25 per season.

EBTW volunteers love tennis and are deeply committed to creating a great playing experience for women.

History

The East Bay Women’s Tennis League was established in 2022, the result of a merger between Contra Costa Spring League (CCSL) and Bay Area Ladies League (BALL).

CCSL and BALL were each founded over 31 years ago. During that time, as women’s lives got ever busier, the overlap of the two leagues created duplicative efforts and scheduling challenges. This included player confusion about which league/teams they were playing matches for, competition for courts space at participating clubs & parks, and difficulty fielding line-ups for matches, resulting in ever-increasing defaults.

Given these and other logistical issues, the leadership of both groups — Kathleen Dunlap (CCSL) and Becca Laufenberg (BALL) — recognized it was time to create a new organization that better served the women’s tennis community in this area. They joined forces and East Bay Women’s Tennis was born. While the new combined league is still in its infancy, things are progressing well and various improvements are in the works.
